Join us as we welcome Laura Botten of Small Lot Wines & Spirits and special guest, Amy Waller, German Wine Ambassador extraordinaire, to taste the many amazing wines Germany has to offer! It’s NOT just about Riesling, but we will drink a bit of premium Riesling to be sure!
Understanding most people’s experience with Riesling was a sugar bomb in a blue bottle at $8, we want to dispel the myth that ALL Riesling presents as such. Contrary to popularly-held notions on Riesling, well over 60% of the wine produced in Germany is technically dry or off-dry, and Riesling is no exception! So we are NOT talking about the one-dimensional, cloyingly sweet Riesling of your early wine-drinking career, but the highly nuanced, balanced, and age-worthy Riesling of the world’s most esteemed producers!
More fun facts: Did you know Germany is the second largest producer of Pinot Grigio (Gris) and Pinot Blanc in the WORLD behind Italy and France, respectively, AND the 3rd largest producer of Pinot Noir in the world behind the United States and France? Pinot Noir loves a cool climate, and Germany offers a perfect home for this esteemed grape. In fact, Forbes recently published an article positing German Pinot Noir may be some of the best in the world! We don’t see much in the States because the Germans are wisely consuming the majority of it, but we will taste at least one stellar representation of German Pinot Noir.
Per capita, Germany is the largest consumer of sparkling wine on the planet, and they produce amazing bubbles, with a rich history of producing in the Champagne Method. Many Champagne houses are German-owned estates and have been since their inception. So expand your palates, step out of your comfort zone, and explore Germany’s amazing and diverse wines!
Read on for more information about our special guest, Amy Waller!
Amy was born into restaurant life in rural Minnesota and learned hospitality from her mom at their small family restaurant. Mom’s lessons taught her the importance of service, passion, connection, and community. All driving principles she has applied during more than 25 years in hospitality. She’s worked at a number of Twin Cities establishments, including Lucia’s, Khâluna, and James Beard’s award-winning The Bachelor Farmer. 2020 brought new opportunities when she began working as an educator and group sales manager at France 44 Wine and Spirits in south Minneapolis.
Now she’s taking on the world of imports in her new sales role with The German Wine Collection. Additionally, she’s a German wine ambassador, a member of Les Dames d’Escoffier Minnesota, the founding member of Twin Cities Somms, a certified sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers, certified Level 3 in wines through the Wine and Spirits Education Trust. She has recently passed the French Wine Scholar certification through the Wine Scholar Guild. It’s rare to see her without a bottle of Riesling in tow.
