When someone says “Pinot,” they’re likely referring to Pinot Noir, a grape variety that looms large, producing some of the most treasured wines in the world. But there’s also all the other Pinots: Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris/Grigio, the lesser known Pinot Meunier.
In the world of wine, where so much can be confusing, it’s easy to assume there’s little to no relation among them at all.
This perception is furthered by their treatment: Pinot Noir may likely be a special occasion treat, found lying down on wooden shelves under dim lighting in the wine shop, while a typical Pinot Grigio is displayed in stacked boxes and affordable enough to casually drink any day.
But get this: they’re genetically identical; they share the same DNA profile. Pinot Noir came first, an ancient variety, with Pinot Blanc and Pinot Grigio following as mutations in only the pigment in the skin.
Join us for a class that will bring clarity to “Pinot” as we taste classic examples of these varieties, noting how their expressions change with winemaking traditions worldwide.
This class is led by Ginny McClure.
